Year 1

In Year 1, our curriculum is designed to spark curiosity and wonder as children transition into more formal learning. By exploring the world around them—from the toys of the past to the vibrant culture of Mexico—pupils develop foundational skills in a creative and supportive environment.

Discovering the Past and Exploring the Globe

Our Humanities journey begins with a nostalgic look at the History of Toys, where children compare how play has changed over generations. This develops into a local geographical study of Thruxton and Andover, helping children understand their place in our community. Later in the year, we broaden our horizons with our "Off We Go To Mexico" unit, exploring a different culture through its geography, traditions, and landscape.

Scientific Inquiry and the Natural World

Science in Year 1 is all about observation and discovery. Throughout the year, children track Seasonal Changes, observing how our environment transforms from autumn through to summer. We also investigate the properties of Everyday Materials, identify different Animals (including humans), and learn to name the various parts of Plants and what they need to grow.

Mastering the Fundamentals of Literacy and Numeracy

In English, we move between Informing and Entertaining. Children learn to write toy labels, instructions, and non-chronological reports, while also developing their storytelling skills by retelling classic tales and describing imaginative characters and settings.

In Mathematics, we focus on building a deep understanding of numbers. Children move from a recap of Early Years concepts to working confidently with numbers up to 100. Key areas of focus include Part-Whole Relationships, additive structures, 2D and 3D shapes, and a practical introduction to Coin Recognition and time.

Creativity, Technology, and Physical Health

  • The Arts: Children develop their fine motor skills and creativity through Observational Drawing, weaving, and even making their own Puppets and Windmills. In Music, they explore the building blocks of sound, including pulse, rhythm, and tempo.

  • Computing: We prioritize Online Safety before diving into the world of "Beebots" to learn the basics of programming and algorithms.

  • PE and Games: From Gymnastics and Dance to ball skills and team building, our PE curriculum ensures children are active and developing the physical coordination needed for a healthy lifestyle.
